Introduction

The surviving Beach Boys members gathered at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre for their documentary premiere, creating a poignant reunion filled with nostalgia and raw emotion. The event marked Brian Wilson’s first public appearance since losing his beloved wife Melinda and being placed under conservatorship earlier this year. Wilson arrived in a wheelchair, joining longtime bandmates Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, David Marks, and Blondie Chaplin on the red carpet for this momentous occasion.

The premiere featured an insightful Q&A session with Love, Jardine, and co-directors Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny. Fans eagerly anticipating the documentary can watch it when it debuts on Disney+ this Friday, May 24. In a particularly moving moment, Wilson received a heartfelt standing ovation as he was wheeled to his seat—a powerful acknowledgment of his immense contribution to music history.

Earlier this month, following Wilson’s neurocognitive diagnosis, his family arranged for his business manager LeeAnn Hard and publicist Jean Sievers to become his co-conservators. Wilson’s daughters, Carnie and Wendy Wilson of Wilson Phillips fame, attended the premiere and shared encouraging updates with ET. “He is doing great!” Carnie enthusiastically reported. “Every day he’s in physical therapy, I’m cooking for him, and he’s spending lots of time with his family. I’m so happy he’s here tonight.” Wendy added with obvious pride, “He’s really doing well considering everything. He’s a survivor—tough and strong, that’s my dad.”

The documentary itself is a goldmine of previously unseen archival footage, fresh interviews with band members, and thoughtful commentary from musical admirers including Lindsey Buckingham, Janelle MonĆ”e, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, and producer Don Was. One particularly special sequence shows the band reuniting at Paradise Cove—the iconic California beach featured on their 1962 debut album cover, Surfin’ Safari. Director Frank Marshall revealed in a promotional clip, “We even got the original surfboard from that shoot. It felt poetic to have the group return to where it all began—a true family reunion filled with joy and lasting memories.”
