Introduction
“It Is Well with My Soul” is a hymn that has provided comfort and hope to countless individuals facing life’s trials. Its origins are deeply rooted in personal tragedy and unwavering faith.
In 1873, Horatio Spafford, a successful lawyer and devout Christian from Chicago, experienced profound loss. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 had already devastated him financially, destroying his significant real estate investments. Shortly thereafter, his four-year-old son succumbed to scarlet fever. Seeking respite, Spafford planned a family trip to Europe. Due to unforeseen business matters, he sent his wife, Anna, and their four daughters ahead on the SS Ville du Havre. Tragically, the ship collided with another vessel, leading to the deaths of all four daughters. Anna survived and sent Horatio a haunting telegram: “Saved alone…”
As Spafford journeyed to reunite with his grieving wife, the ship’s captain informed him when they passed over the location where his daughters had perished. In that moment of unimaginable sorrow, Spafford penned the words to “It Is Well with My Soul,” expressing a profound trust in God’s plan despite overwhelming grief.
The hymn’s melody was composed by Philip Bliss, a renowned hymn writer of the time. Moved by Spafford’s poignant lyrics, Bliss created a tune that complements the hymn’s message of peace amid adversity. He named the tune “Ville du Havre,” after the ill-fated ship.
Over the years, “It Is Well with My Soul” has been embraced by various artists, each bringing their unique interpretation to the timeless piece. Among these renditions, Joey + Rory’s version stands out for its heartfelt simplicity and sincerity. Released in 2016 on their album “Hymns That Are Important to Us,” their rendition resonates deeply, especially considering Joey Feek’s battle with cancer during its recording. The duo’s genuine faith and love shine through, offering solace to listeners facing their own challenges.

Lyrics
When peace, like a river, attended my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin, not in part but the whole
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
